54th Street and Shattuck Avenue neighbors first met on April 19th to hear about a local steering group's tentative plans to put a garden on the open space owned by CalTrans on the corner of 54th and Shattuck. Here are the extensive meeting notes provided by Tom.
We learned that the space must follow CalTrans rules. There can be no permanent structures like benches, but boulders and logs are allowed. And pollinator and native plants and trees can be planted and will be maintained and watered by volunteers. The beautiful, mature redwoods already on the site will remain and become one of the focal areas of the garden. Current plans also call for a mural to be painted on one of the freeway pillars. Although it is not permissible for people to camp on the site according to CalTrans rules, any member of our community will be able to enjoy the area during daylight hours once the garden is established.
As per a recent email from Catherine Li, things are already heating up. The group submitted to CalTrans a finalized design and plant list in May. Shortly thereafter, the owner of the property (CaLTrans) approved the plan. Here is the copy of that approved permit. The garden project at 54th and Shattuck can now move forward. You can now weigh in here by July 20th on what you want included in the mural to be created on one of the columns supporting the freeway near the garden.
